New Reader Mode: Native Toolbar & Sidebar

FeatureReader Mode

Another highly anticipated feature is on the way: a refactored reader mode with a fully native toolbar and sidebar.

We’re excited to share that we’re refactoring the reader mode with native code. This upcoming update will replace HTML-based components with a fully native toolbar and native sidebar, bringing a smoother, more integrated macOS reading experience.

Core Capabilities

Native Toolbar Component

The new reader mode will feature a fully native toolbar component instead of an HTML toolbar:

  • The toolbar is rendered using native macOS UI instead of web views
  • Button clicks and interactions will feel more responsive and fluid
  • Toolbar styling and behavior will follow macOS conventions for a more consistent look and feel

Native Sidebar with Quick Event Switching

To make it easier to move between different events, we’re adding a native sidebar on the left side of the reader instead of an HTML-based list:

  • The sidebar is built with native UI elements, not HTML
  • You can switch to other events without leaving reader mode
  • Events are sorted chronologically to help you quickly find related content
  • Clicking an event instantly loads its content in the reader

The Vision

This refactor is about making Sidefy’s reader feel like a first-class native reading experience on macOS. By moving critical parts of the reader to native code, we can make long-form reading feel lighter and smoother, reduce jank and loading delays, and prepare the foundation for future features like deeper keyboard shortcuts, gestures, and more powerful in-article tools.

The new reader mode will keep the flexibility you already have today, but with a more responsive and intuitive feel. Whether you’re focused on a single long article or jumping between multiple events, navigation and reading should feel noticeably smoother.

Share Your Thoughts

We’d love to hear what you’d like to see in the new reader experience – shortcuts, layout options, or tools that would make your reading workflow better.

Feel free to share your ideas and feedback through GitHub Issues and help us shape the future of the Sidefy reader.

New reader mode refactor is coming soon – stay tuned for the release.
